A Mindset Shift for a More Fulfilled August

August Always Feels Like a Turning Point

The air is heavier, the days are long but beginning to wane, and there’s this unmistakable shift—you can feel something winding down, even as everything around you is still buzzing with life. August carries a quiet kind of urgency. It’s like life is nudging us to soak up what’s left of the season, to be present before everything changes again.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that fulfillment doesn’t wait for the “right” moment. It comes from choosing, intentionally and daily, to focus on joy, optimism, and what truly lights us up.

Doctor Merryman would say happiness isn’t a destination—it’s a mindset. And if we want this season to feel as good as it looks in our photos, it starts with shifting the way we see things.

So if you’re ready to step into August with a bit more purpose, lightness, and good energy, here’s your Doctor Merryman-inspired guide to making it count.

Step 1: Release the ‘End-of-Summer Pressure’

There’s something about August that makes me feel like I need to squeeze everything in—take the trip, organize the house, wrap up that one project, finally commit to the habit I’ve been avoiding.

But here’s the truth: trying to do it all at once usually just leads to burnout.

I’ve learned that small, consistent shifts make a much bigger impact than overwhelming overhauls. Now I ask myself:

What’s one small thing I can do today that brings more ease, joy, or clarity?

Maybe it’s stepping outside barefoot, calling someone you love, or finishing that lingering to-do. Whatever it is, give yourself permission to go slow and steady. That’s where lasting change lives.

Step 2: Reframe Transitions as Opportunities

August is naturally a time of transition—summer winding down, routines about to shift. And with change often comes stress, uncertainty, or a touch of melancholy.

But Doctor Merryman reminds us: transitions aren’t endings. They’re just new chapters starting.

Last August, I planned a peaceful weekend retreat, expecting sunshine and stillness. Instead? It rained nonstop, everything was off schedule, and I was ready to call it a bust. But something shifted when I decided to stop resisting and just be in it.

We found a tiny bookstore, made spontaneous memories, and ended up laughing through the downpour. That trip is now one of my favorite moments—not because it went perfectly, but because we let it become something else.

Perspective makes the difference. When things feel off-track, ask yourself: How can I work with this instead of against it?

Step 3: Protect Your Energy

August can feel overstimulating. The back-to-school prep, the looming deadlines, the sense that something’s coming—but it’s not here yet.

That’s why it’s more important than ever to be intentional about what (and who) you let into your space.

I started noticing how I felt after different interactions—conversations, social media scrolls, even the music or podcasts in my ears. If it left me feeling anxious, drained, or off, I made space for something better.

Here’s what helped:

  • Playlists that lift my mood
  • Conversations that leave me feeling more like myself
  • Accounts that inspire, not exhaust
  • People who make room for lightness

Protecting your energy isn’t about avoidance—it’s about alignment. This August, notice what lifts you up, and lean into that.

Step 4: Celebrate the Small Stuff

Big milestones are easy to recognize. But August is full of quiet wins that deserve celebration too—especially when everything feels like it’s speeding up.

Lately, I’ve made it a practice to celebrate the small victories:

  • Saying no to something that didn’t serve me
  • Following through on a hard decision
  • Making space to rest, even if the to-do list wasn’t done

Those small moments? They are the life we’re building.

Success isn’t one grand gesture. It’s a collection of tiny, intentional steps. Honor them. Name them. Let them count.

Step 5: Choose Joy (Even Now)

Some days, joy flows freely. Other days, you have to go looking for it. But August reminds us that there’s beauty in choosing joy even as the light starts to change.

For me, that looks like:

  • A slow morning before the rush
  • Smiling on purpose
  • Finding one good moment—even if it’s just the way the light hits the trees

Doctor Merryman would say joy isn’t passive. It’s a decision we make—over and over—until it becomes our default.

Final Thoughts: Make August Yours

This season isn’t about doing more. It’s about being more present.

So as August unfolds, let go of the pressure to “get it right.” Embrace the shifts. Fill your space with people and energy that nourish you. Celebrate the little wins. And choose joy—even when it’s hard.

Because real fulfillment? It doesn’t wait for perfect timing. It lives right here—in the season you’re in.

The Relationship That Quietly Shapes Every Financial Decision
By John Mance July 6, 2026
The Freedom You’re Looking For May Already Be Within Reach When most people think about independence, they picture dramatic change. A new career. A new city. A different relationship. A fresh start that finally allows them to become who they're meant to be. It's understandable. We often associate freedom with escape. But genuine independence rarely begins with changing your surroundings. It begins by changing what has authority over your life. As Viktor Frankl wisely observed, "Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances." Freedom, in its deepest form, begins long before circumstances change. It begins within. Independence Is Not Reinvention There is a quiet pressure in our culture to become someone new. Improve yourself. Optimize yourself. Reinvent yourself. But growth is rarely about abandoning who you are. More often, it's about removing what no longer belongs. The fear. The approval seeking. The stories you've carried that were never truly yours. The person underneath those layers has been there all along. Notice What You've Been Depending On Dependency isn't always obvious. Sometimes it's approval. Sometimes certainty. Sometimes the belief that someone else must tell us we're ready. These external reference points slowly become decision-makers. Without realizing it, we begin living according to permission rather than conviction. Independence begins the moment you notice those patterns. Freedom Grows Through Small Decisions We often imagine freedom arriving all at once. But lasting freedom usually develops quietly. One honest conversation. One healthy boundary. One decision made because it aligns with your values—not because it earns someone's approval. These moments rarely feel dramatic. Yet they reshape a life. You Don't Need Perfect Certainty Many dreams remain untouched because people are waiting for certainty. For the perfect time. The perfect plan. The perfect confidence. But certainty is rarely available in advance. Confidence often arrives after action. Not before it. Waiting for complete certainty can become another form of dependency. Freedom Is Living Without Constant Permission One of the deepest forms of independence is learning to trust your own direction. Not because you'll never make mistakes. But because you've learned that mistakes are part of growth—not evidence against it. The more you practice returning to your own values, your own wisdom, and your own integrity, the less your life becomes governed by outside voices. That is where freedom quietly begins. As we celebrate independence this month, perhaps the most meaningful question isn't about where you need to go. It's about what no longer needs to govern you. What would change if you stopped waiting for permission? You may discover that the freedom you've been seeking has been growing within you all along.
