The Healing Power of Merryman:

Why Smiles Matter More Than Resolutions

March is here, and let’s be honest—those shiny New Year’s resolutions? They might already be collecting dust. Maybe that gym routine didn’t stick, the meal prepping fizzled out, or life just got in the way (because it always does). But before you start feeling guilty, here’s a fresh perspective: maybe it’s not about the resolutions at all.

What if, instead of obsessing over discipline and rigid goals, we focused on something simpler—joy?

That’s where merryman comes in. It’s about embracing life with lightheartedness, leading with laughter, and realizing that a smile can be just as powerful as any checklist. Because when we feel good, we do good—and that changes everything.

Smiling: The Small Act That Changes Everything

Science backs this up: when you smile, even if you don’t feel like it, your brain releases dopamine and serotonin, the same feel-good chemicals that boost your mood, reduce stress, and even improve your health. It’s like a natural reset button for your emotions.

Beyond that, research shows that people who maintain a positive mindset are more likely to achieve their goals than those who rely on sheer willpower. Why? Because happiness fuels motivation. When we enjoy the process, we’re far more likely to keep going.

Forget Resolutions, Focus on Merryman

Instead of stressing over undone resolutions, try shifting your focus to joy instead. Here’s how:

1. Celebrate the Small Stuff

Did you drink more water today? Get outside for five minutes? Choose patience when you could’ve lost it? That counts. The little moments add up.

2. Reframe the Hard Days

Skipped a workout? Your body probably needed rest. Messed up at work? It’s a learning moment, not a failure. Every challenge can be flipped into something useful.

3. Surround Yourself with Good Energy

Positivity is contagious, so be intentional about the energy around you. Listen to music that lifts you up. Spend time with people who make you laugh. Do more of what makes you feel alive.

For me, one of my favorite ways to reset my mood is cooking with my kids. No matter how stressful the day has been, there’s something about stirring a pot together, cracking eggs (sometimes a little too enthusiastically), and watching him light up as we create something delicious that instantly makes me smile. It’s a reminder that joy doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s often found in the simplest moments.

4. Smile—Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

Try it right now. Just a small one. It might feel forced, but your brain doesn’t know the difference. It’ll still get the message: Hey, we’re doing okay.

The Ripple Effect of Joy

The best part? Positivity spreads. A simple smile at a stranger can brighten their day. A kind word can shift someone’s entire mindset. When we lead with joy, it creates a ripple effect that reaches further than we ever realize.

So if your resolutions didn’t stick, who cares? Instead of forcing change, try inviting it—with lightness, laughter, and a little merryman.

Because when we lead with joy, everything else tends to fall into place.
